Not so Old Fashioned Anymore
September 28, 2006
I’m usually quite an old fashioned guy. Do I use one of those fancy new media players for my music? Nooo, I use the mplayer command line utility, and shell’s auto-completion for searching(so I call it). Do I use Kontact’s fancy todo-plugin? Nah, I have literally a stack of papers for “organizing” my daily work.
However, some days ago, don’t ask me why, I thought “let’s try out all those modern thingies”. And so I did.
Now I use Kontact’s todo plugin, addressbook, and what not. There’s probably some little magician in there too. That works just splendidly, but it doesn’t stop there. It stores all the things remotely in my IMAP account without any pesky server setup. How cool is that? I was convinced one had to find find a groupware solution for remote storage, but apparently all one need is Kontact.
With Amarok, I now have a panty fancy front cover gallery over all my albums. With mega instant search. And bling bling fading when shutting down the program. And all kind of perverse statistics I don’t even want to have. And lyrics to all my Beatles albums(not that I spoils the moment by singing along). A gazzilion radio stations. And automatic update when I move my files around. Wow.
There are many things to do. But for now, the sun dips in the horizon.

Frans,
I probably shouldn’t say this in public… but I really want to redesign KOrganizer’s todo view for KDE4. So, if you have any brilliant UI ideas or other comments for improvement please let me know.

Yeah, I got a chocolate phone, then I tried to eat it. Man, that thing was nasty goin’ down, but now I’m half man, half machine. Check out my blog, http://underdogs.wordpress.com , for plenty of non-smart humor about anything and everything.

Actually, I found Kontact’s todo list a bit limited. You might want to look into BasKet (http://basket.kde.org), the current beta is really amazing in terms of functionality.

yeah, I got addicted to kontact a while ago. now I can’t live without it.
winterz: I have a bunch of knotes on things that bug me about the todos and calendar. I’ll try to remember to tell you about them someday.
as for basket, I’ve been using it a bit, but it’s kinda confusing. I get the impression there are lots of features that I could use if I only knew where they were.

kontact is great (although I’m more used to Mozilla Suite). I’m not such a fan of amarok, I still need to find the ultimate player in Unix (it’s iTunes in Win, please don’t punch me too bad for stating this).
